I love to read a good book, albeit that it usually happens when I’m on vacation or when I’m seeking information. As of late, however, with the global pandemic requiring us to stay at home, it is the perfect time to escape reality and dive into some good novels.
You don’t need to physically have the book on hand to read. You can purchase them online (For Canadians through Chapters or Indigo) and download them to your device (Kindle, iPad or smart phone). If you are a bit more economical like me and don’t mind waiting for certain books to become available, I highly recommend borrowing electronically from your local library. For example, I have a membership with Toronto Public Library and through my account, I have created a wish list of books I want to read. I sign them out based on availability or I add my name to the waitlist, whereby I got an email notification when it is ready for download. And I read them off my iPad.
Below is a list of books I recommend. They range from biographies (my favourite), fictional action and self development.

- Tools of Titans by Tim Ferriss
Tim Ferriss compiles a variety of tactics, routines and habits from a variety of billionaires, icons and world class performers that he interviewed on his podcast, The Tim Ferriss Show. This is one of my all time favourite books as I think it is the most useful one I have ever read. In fact, I have re-read it a few times so I could take notes.
I also recommend Tribe of Mentors. Short Life Advice from the Best in the World , also written by Tim Ferris. He asks a variety of interview style questions to some of the most successful people in the world, with the intention of sharing their habits, failures, book recommendations etc. Some I enjoyed reading include: Kyle Maynard (first quadruple amputee to ascent Mount Kilimanjaro); Ayaan Hirsi Ali (I love her book Infidel ); Jesse Williams (actor from Grey’s Anatomy who plays Dr. Jackson Avery); Lewis Cantley (made advances in cancer research); Vitalik Buterin (creator of cryptocurrency Ethereum); Turia Pitt (inspirational advocate/Ironman Champ/Ted Talk speaker after she became physically disfigured as a result a firestorm in Australia while competing in a marathon); Brene Brown (I love her books and Ted Talks on personal development); Annie Thorisdottir (Fittest Woman on Earth from Crossfit Games); Kelly Slater (best surfer).
- Everything is F*cked and The Subtle Art of Not Giving A F*ck by Mark Manson
Both these books are considered self-help books, but not your typical mindless positivity. They are both great reads that offers a different view on how to process the challenges of life. Personally he expressed a lot of what I think but struggle to articulate or even make sense of.
- When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi
a memoir written by Dr Paul Kalanithi about his life and his battle with stage IV lung cancer.
- The Neuroscientist Who Lost Her Mind by Barbara Lipska
Dr Lipska, a neuroscientist, who was diagnosed with metastatic melanoma and as the cancer progressed to her brain, she experienced a variety of behavioural and cognitive symptoms of mental disorders including schizophrenia. After her recovery, she wrote this book recalling her experience while identifying the ways her brain had changed during treatment.
- Awaken the Giant Within by Tony Robbins
No book list would be complete without at least one reference to Tony Robbins. I am a huge fan of his work, but this book in particular is my favourite of his collection. It is great for anyone as it encourages you to push yourself to achieve more in any aspect of your life (relationships, finances, emotional well being etc).
- The Five Love Languages by Gary Chapman
This book is a must for anyone who wants to better any relationship. It can be key to underlying your preferred way of receiving love, and possibly figuring out your loved ones’ preferred style.
- Swear on this Life by Renee Carlino
This is a quick fictional romance novel that may be a bit on the cheesy side but is one of hope and possibility. It’s perfect for sitting on a beach or before bed time read.
- Girl Wash Your Face by Rachel Hollis
This relatable “memoir” discredits the notion that other’s have things figured out and it’s picture perfect, meanwhile your life seems to be a mess. I loved reading Rachel’s take on the lies we tell ourselves and how she processed through each of them, some applicable to my own life. This is a great quick light read for a “self-help” book.
- Mitch Rapp CIA agent fictional series by Vince Flynn
I started reading Vince Flynn’s books when I found out he was one of the writers for the television series “24” (One of my favourite series). The books feature Mitch Rapp, a counter-terrorism specialist from the CIA. To date, there are 18 books in the series. I have read them in chronological order, but you can read them out of sequence without being lost. And disclaimer, because I enjoy reading these books doesn’t mean I am advocating murder or that I share some of the strong opinions of the main character Mitch Rapp. They are just great drama action filled fictional novels.
- Gabrielle Bernstein books
These motivational books include “The Universe Has Your Back”, “May Cause Miracles”, “Spirit Junkie”, “Miracles Now”. I’ve read them many times as they offer lots of tools and exercises. For example, May Cause Miracles is a 40 day guide book, with tips and exercises each day.
- Biographies & Memoirs of famous people
I am fascinated by peoples life stories so love reading about the lives of those well known, including celebrities, politicians, entrepreneurs, religious figures etc. Here are some I enjoyed reading about:
– “Believe Me” by Yolanda Hadid (her journey with Lyme disease)
-“Freedom in Exile: the Autobiography of the Dalai Lama”
-“True Love” by Jennifer Lopez
-“Open Book” by Jessica Simpson (I was curious to read more about how she became billionaire from shoe designing and not singing/reality tv)
-“Lucky Man” by Michael J Fox (his journey with Parkinson’s)
-“The Honest life” by Jessica Alba (her multi million dollar Honest brand, including her journey to clean beauty)
-“How to Make Love Like a Pornstar” by Jenna Jameson (I was curious about what made her want to get into the adult film industry)
-“Long Walk to Freedom: the Autobiography of Nelson Mandela”
